Blog 7: Who needs vitamins?
Hello, I’m Dr . Sandip Mathur, a gastroenterologist in Abilene, Texas. I’ve been practicing medicine for over forty years.
Who needs vitamins? Let’s talk about vitamin D. Also called the sunshine vitamin, it can be made by our skin on exposure to sunlight. However, exposure to sunlight is often limited either by climate or choice. There is a need to limit excessive sun exposure to prevent skin cancer. So most adults will need 800 – 1000 units of vitamin D daily. If you have a blood test for vitamin D and the level is below 30 you may need more vitamin D, possibly 2000 units daily. If you take acid reducing medications such as omeprazole and pantoprazole, you may also need these supplements. Vitamin D is found in milk and dairy, eggs and fish.
Next, we will consider vitamin C.
